Black river ring

Black river, a wetland in Jamaica is a beautiful serene place with mangrove trees on its banks which thrive in coastal, salty waters that other trees cannot tolerate. Their thick, dense roots act as natural buffers against storm surges,trapping debris brought in by tides.

The black waters caused by decomposing vegetation and peat formations hold vast amounts of carbon.

I created and wrote the inspiration above for this piece in 2021 and have left it unchanged. 

Since then, in October 2025 Jamaica endured Hurricane Melissa, the most destructive hurricane in its history. The coastal town of Black River was catastrophically damaged. The storm surges at over 3 metres high were unstoppable and the natural defences of the river couldn’t withstand them.
